ApplixWare

One of the most popular office suites for UNIX, ApplixWare includes a word processor, spreadsheet, database manager, HTML editor, and e-mail client. It is also the only office suite available in a Japanese version.

StarOffice

I haven't used StarOffice myself, but it seems to have a lot of satisfied users. If you visit the Star Division site, you may wish to look at their feature comparison with MS Office 97. Pretty impressive. StarOffice is available in English and German (not sure about other languages).

WordPerfect

Yes, the WordPerfect. The word processor that used to be the one to beat (and many would say it still is, despite the market share). Currently available is only the word processor, not a full office suite, but WordPerfect includes enough spreadsheet and graphics features to satisfy many users. Available in English, French, Dutch, German, Spanish, and Italian.

The following product may be no more. I haven't been able to reach their website. If anyone has any info, please contact me.

Xclamation (DTP)

I'm not sure this really belongs in the ready-to-use category, but it is to my knowledge the only WYSIWYG desktop publishing program available for Linux. I've found it to be brilliant in some areas (object rotation, for example, is extraordinarily fast and smooth), but peculiarly lacking in others (no Undo function!). But go ahead and try it yourself. You can download the program, and apply by e-mail for a 30-day trial license.

Axene, the makers of Xclamation, also have a word processor, XAllWrite, coming soon. It's been coming soon for at least a year.

Webmaster's log, 10/17/99
I've been going through the site and updating the links, many of which are almost a year old. It's interesting to note that of the five external links on this page, only one was still valid. Here's the breakdown:

Old links to external pages (total): 22
Still valid: 16
Moved w/ redirect: 2
Moved, no redirect, site still up: 3
Site vanished: 1

Links on this page: 5
Still valid: 1
Moved w/ redirect: 1
Moved, no redirect, site still up: 2
Site vanished: 1

It doesn't take much time or effort to post a redirect page. With all the money they undoubtedly spend on their websites, you would think the proprietary software vendors could do a little better than this.
